Reconditioned IBC Totes
Like new at a fraction of the cost. Every reconditioned tote is inspected, washed, repaired, tested, and certified to our strict quality standards.
Professional Reconditioning You Can Trust
Reconditioning is not just a quick rinse and relabel. At Ohio IBC Totes, our reconditioning process is a rigorous, 12-step procedure that transforms used IBC totes into containers that look, function, and perform like new. Every unit passes through distinct stages of inspection, cleaning, repair, testing, and certification before it earns our reconditioned label.
The result is a container that costs 60-80% less than buying new but delivers the same reliable performance. For most applications, there is simply no practical reason to buy a brand-new IBC tote when a professionally reconditioned one is available at a fraction of the price.
Our reconditioning facility in Columbus, Ohio processes thousands of IBC totes each year. We maintain detailed records of every container that passes through our process, ensuring full traceability and accountability for every reconditioned unit we sell.
Every reconditioned tote leaves our facility with new valves, new gaskets, a documented condition report, and the confidence that it has been pressure-tested for leaks and graded by trained technicians. We reject any container that does not meet our standards, diverting approximately 8-10% of incoming totes to our recycling program because they cannot be brought up to our reconditioned quality level.

Our 12-Step Reconditioning Process
From receiving to certification, every step is designed to restore used IBC totes to the highest possible standard. Here is exactly what happens to every container in our facility.
Each step is documented in our tracking system. The final condition report references every stage, providing complete transparency into what was done to each container.
Receiving & Initial Assessment
Every incoming tote is visually assessed for structural damage, contamination, and overall condition. We record the previous contents, manufacturer, production date, and UN rating expiration. Containers with irreparable structural damage, severe chemical contamination, or expired UN ratings are immediately diverted to our recycling program rather than reconditioning.
Our receiving team logs each tote into our tracking system with a unique identifier that follows the container through every step of the reconditioning process. This creates the traceability chain that appears on the final condition report. We photograph the as-received condition for documentation.
Disassembly & Component Inspection
The bottom valve, top cap, and gaskets are removed. The steel cage is inspected for weld integrity, rust, and frame alignment. The pallet base is checked for cracks, warping, and load-bearing capacity. Any component that does not meet our standards is flagged for replacement with new OEM-equivalent parts.
Each weld point on the cage is visually inspected for cracks, corrosion, and separation. The cage is checked for square alignment using a precision level. Cage tube diameter, wall thickness, and galvanizing condition are assessed. Pallet bases are load-tested on a calibrated platform to verify structural integrity under weight.
High-Pressure Pre-Rinse
Before the main cleaning process begins, each tote receives a high-pressure water pre-rinse at 140-180°F to remove the bulk of any residual product from the interior walls, bottom, valve port, and top fill area. This pre-rinse removes approximately 95% of residual material and prepares the tote for the detergent wash stage.
Our pre-rinse station uses commercial-grade pressure washers delivering 3,000+ PSI at 5+ GPM with heated water. The high pressure and temperature combination breaks down most organic and chemical residues on contact. Rinse water is collected, tested, and disposed of according to EPA wastewater regulations.
Alkaline Detergent Wash
An FDA-approved alkaline detergent solution is circulated through the container at controlled temperature (140°F/60°C) and concentration. This stage breaks down organic residues, fats, proteins, sugars, and other materials that the pre-rinse may not have fully removed. The detergent is selected based on the category of previous contents for maximum cleaning effectiveness.
We maintain multiple detergent formulations optimized for different residue types: alkaline detergent for fats and oils, acidic detergent for mineral deposits and scale, and solvent-based cleaners for adhesive residues. The technician selects the appropriate cleaning protocol based on the recorded previous contents.
Sanitizing Rinse (Food-Grade Units)
For containers destined for food-grade certification, a final sanitizing rinse with FDA-approved sanitizer (quaternary ammonium compound or peracetic acid at regulated concentrations) eliminates any remaining microbial contamination. The tote is then inverted and air-dried in a clean, dedicated drying area to prevent moisture accumulation and recontamination.
Sanitizer concentration is verified with chemical test strips before application. Contact time, temperature, and sanitizer lot numbers are recorded in the cleaning record. The drying area is physically separated from the receiving and cleaning areas to prevent cross-contamination.
Interior Inspection & Odor Check
After cleaning and drying, a technician performs a visual inspection of the interior surfaces under bright lighting. The interior is checked for residual staining, etching, hazing, scratches, or any contamination that survived the cleaning process. An odor check is performed to verify complete removal of previous contents. Containers that retain odor or visible contamination are re-cleaned or downgraded.
The interior inspection is performed using a high-intensity LED work light inserted through the top fill opening. The technician examines all interior surfaces including the bottom, sidewalls, and areas around the valve port. Any container that fails the odor test is returned to the cleaning stage for additional treatment.
Cage Repair & Restoration
Dented cage tubes are straightened using hydraulic press equipment. Corroded sections are wire-brushed, treated with rust converter, and sealed with zinc-rich cold galvanizing compound. Bent frame members are realigned. Any cage tube with wall thickness reduced below acceptable minimums by corrosion is cut out and replaced with new tubing.
Our cage repair station includes hydraulic straightening presses, MIG welding equipment for tube replacement, and cold galvanizing spray for corrosion repair. All cage repairs are documented in the condition report. Cages with extensive structural damage that would require more than minor repair are diverted to recycling.
Pallet Base Repair or Replacement
Steel pallet bases are inspected for corrosion, cracks, and weld integrity at all connection points. Composite and wood pallets are checked for cracks, warping, and load capacity. Damaged pallets are repaired or replaced entirely. Pallet fork pockets are verified for proper clearance and alignment for both forklift and pallet jack entry from all four sides.
Pallet bases account for a significant percentage of reconditioning rejects. A compromised pallet can fail catastrophically under the weight of a filled tote, creating a dangerous situation. We apply strict criteria and replace rather than repair whenever there is any doubt about structural integrity.
New Valve & Gasket Installation
Every reconditioned tote receives a brand-new 2" NPT butterfly valve, new valve gasket, and a new or thoroughly refurbished 6" top cap with new gasket. We use OEM-equivalent replacement parts manufactured to the same specifications as the original components. Valves are tested for smooth operation, complete seal, and drip-free closure before installation.
We stock replacement valves in both polypropylene with EPDM seals (standard) and stainless steel with PTFE seals (food-grade and chemical applications). The valve type installed is matched to the tote's intended use. Customers can also request specific valve types or upgrades such as cam lock fittings or ball valves.
Pressurized Leak Testing
After reassembly with all new components, every tote undergoes a pressurized air leak test. The sealed container is pressurized to a standardized test pressure (typically 2-3 PSI above atmospheric) and monitored for any pressure drop over a defined 5-minute hold period. Any container that shows even a micro-leak is rejected from the reconditioned inventory and diverted to recycling.
Our leak testing station uses calibrated digital pressure gauges with 0.01 PSI resolution. The test is performed with the valve closed and the top cap sealed. A pressure drop of more than 0.1 PSI over the hold period constitutes a failure. We do not repair or re-test failed containers; they are automatically diverted to recycling. Our leak test pass rate is approximately 97%.
Final Grading & Quality Review
A trained technician performs a comprehensive final quality review and assigns a condition grade (A, B, or C) based on our standardized grading criteria. The grade assessment considers bottle clarity, staining, cage condition, pallet condition, overall cosmetic appearance, and suitability for various applications. The grade is permanent and accurately represents what the buyer will receive.
Grading criteria are documented and standardized across all technicians to ensure consistency. Each grade has defined parameters for bottle clarity, staining level, cage dent tolerance, and overall appearance. Borderline cases are always graded conservatively (downgraded rather than upgraded) to ensure buyers never receive a container that underperforms its stated grade.
Labeling, Documentation & Inventory
The tote is labeled with the assigned grade, reconditioning date, previous contents category, facility identification, and unique tracking number. Each unit is photographed from multiple angles and logged in our inventory management system. A condition report is generated that accompanies the tote through sale and delivery, providing the buyer with complete transparency and traceability.
The condition report includes: unique tracking number, manufacturer and model, production date, UN rating status, previous contents category, cleaning protocol used, components replaced, leak test results, assigned grade, reconditioning date, and technician identification. Food-grade totes receive additional documentation including sanitizer lot numbers, concentration readings, and contact times.

Cost Savings Breakdown
The financial case for reconditioned IBC totes is straightforward: you get the same capacity, the same functionality, and the same durability for 60-80% less than new. Here is what that looks like at different order sizes.
Total Cost of Ownership Analysis
When evaluating reconditioned versus new IBC totes, consider the total cost of ownership over your full usage cycle. A reconditioned tote typically provides 3-8 years of additional service at 60-80% less than the cost of new. Even if a reconditioned tote has a slightly shorter remaining lifespan than a brand-new container, the cost-per-year-of-service is dramatically lower.
For example, a new tote costing $400 that lasts 10 years costs $40 per year of service. A reconditioned tote costing $100 that lasts 5 years costs only $20 per year of service, which is a 50% savings on a per-year basis. And at end of life, both totes can be recycled through our program, recovering additional value from the materials.

Why Reconditioned?
Same Function, Lower Cost
A reconditioned tote holds the same volume, dispenses the same way, and fits the same equipment as a new one. The only difference is the price tag. Every reconditioned tote has new valves and gaskets, so the dispensing components are literally brand new.
Better for the Planet
Every reused tote prevents 30+ lbs of plastic and 70+ lbs of steel from being manufactured from scratch, saving energy, water, and raw materials. Reconditioning uses approximately 90% fewer resources than manufacturing a new container.
Quality You Can Verify
Unlike buying used from unknown sources, our reconditioned totes come with documented condition reports, known history, a 90-day warranty, and a clear grading system. You know exactly what you are getting before you pay.
Available Now
New IBC totes can have lead times of 4-8 weeks from the manufacturer. Our reconditioned inventory is in stock and ready for immediate pickup or delivery. Same-day and next-day availability for most grades and sizes.
Proven Track Record
We have sold over 50,000 reconditioned totes to more than 2,000 customers across Ohio and the Midwest. Our repeat customer rate exceeds 80%, which tells you everything you need to know about the quality of our reconditioning work.
Environmental Impact Per Tote
Every reconditioned tote you buy instead of new delivers measurable environmental benefits. Here is the quantified impact of choosing reconditioned at both per-unit and fleet scale.
Reconditioning Is Recycling in Action
Recycling breaks materials down to build something new. Reconditioning keeps the original product intact and in service, which uses dramatically less energy and generates dramatically less waste. A reconditioned IBC tote uses roughly 90% fewer resources than manufacturing a new one. When you choose reconditioned, you are choosing the highest form of sustainability: extending the useful life of products that are already made.
The waste hierarchy recognized by the EPA and environmental agencies worldwide ranks reuse above recycling because reuse avoids the energy and material costs of breaking down and reforming materials. Reconditioning is the industrial equivalent of reuse: taking a product that still has structural integrity and useful life remaining, restoring it to full functionality, and putting it back into productive service. It is the most environmentally responsible choice you can make when sourcing IBC totes.
